The most common method of recovering ferrous scrap from pre-shredded solid wastes/Biomass waste involves the use of magnetic recovery systems. Ferrous materials are usually recovered either after shredding or before air classification. Magnetic recovery systems have also been used at landfill disposal sites. The specific locations, where ferrous materials are recovered will depend on the objectives to be achieved, such as reduction of breakage, wear and tear on processing and separation equipment, degree of product purity achieved and the required recovery efficiency

Following Techniques are used for the magnetic separation.

Suspended magnet

Shredo’s Magnetic separator, a permanent magnet is used to attract the ferrous metal from the waste stream. When the attracted metal reaches the area, where there is no magnetism, it falls away freely. This ferrous metal is then collected in a container. Suspended magnet cam be used pre-shredding & after shredding too.

Electrical Magnet

Magnetic separation is used to recover the ferrous metals from Municipal Solid Waste or from mixed materials containing non-ferrous recyclables. Magnets may be either of the permanent or the electromagnetic type. They come in one or more of three configurations, namely, the drum, the magnetic head pulley, and the overhead magnetic belt. They may be assembled and suspended in line, cross-belt, or mounted as head pulleys in the material transfer conveyor. The magnetic head pulley-conveyor consists of a magnetic head pulley mounted in a conveyor. In its operation, the material to be sorted is passed over the pulley in such a manner that the nonferrous material will fall by gravity vertically onto the next conveying device while the ferrous is attracted by the head pulley and deflected to a separate area.
